Dotty Dumpling's Dowry, a dog-friendly Madison establishment, has been a local favorite for over four decades, tracing its origins back to 1969 when Jeff Stanley opened an eclectic gift shop in Des Moines, Iowa. Stanley's passion soon shifted from jewelry to hamburgers, leading to the first Dotty Dumpling's Dowry restaurant... opening on Madison's Monroe Street in 1974. Relocating to Regent Street two years later, it became a popular gathering spot, particularly after Badger football games. By 1990, the demand for space brought the restaurant to Fairchild Street, where Stanley earned the title of Madison's 'Hamburger King'. After being displaced by the Overture Center in 2001, Dotty Dumpling's Dowry found its current home on Frances Street in 2003, continuing its tradition as a family-owned and operated business under Stanley's daughter, Rachael. This beloved downtown venue is celebrated for its award-winning hamburgers, Friday fish fry, homemade soups and chili, and fresh salads, offering a taste of Madison tradition enjoyed by guests of all ages. Patrons can enjoy their meal while taking in the sounds of Blues or Motown music, perhaps while selecting from 24 Wisconsin craft beers on tap.
